E68 Xbox 360 error code | Tinker Mods
A common code
By far, the E68 error code on the Xbox 360 can be very common. This error is caused by the hard drive and can come from several problems related to it. Let's talk about what is happening and how you can fix it.
The southbridge
I'll start with the worst possible news. Though this E68 error deals with the hard drive, the southbridge chip on your motherboard could be the culprit. This is because so much communication is processed and passed through the southbridge. If you try everything else on this page but still can't get the E68 error to clear, you most likely have a problem with the southbridge. Unfortunately that is also not an easy fix. Most people would find it easier to simply replace the motherboard with a working one like these.
Iffy connections
The second issue can be the connection to the HDD itself. The ports and cables can be shorted or damaged. Depending on which console version you have, this could be a simple fix. For instance, the Xbox 360 phat version can have bad cables on the inside of the external hard drive enclosure. Where as the slim could be the connection ports itself, which might mean you have to desolder and install a new one. Due to the differences in console versions I can't go into every single way you can fix this. Regardless, this should still be the next step you look into after trying the fix below.
E68 = hard drive
More than likely, the Hard drive itself is the cause. Try replacing the hard drive or simply removing it. If doing that causes the E68 error code to clear from your Xbox 360 console, then you know you need to replace it.
