Playstation 1 FAQ
How many LED lights can the PS1 console handle?
Different colors, different volts
If using 5mm LED lights for your PS1 console, there is a general rule of thumb. Most colors run 2.2-2.6 volts and specialty colors can run higher. The Max would be around 4 volts. Some UV and Pink lights can run higher, but most of the time they run 3.5-4.0 volts. Find the Voltages of each LED light/color. If you are using a lower voltage from 2-2.5 volts you should be fine using 10 LED lights. Honestly you could probably run 15 or 20 but that could be pushing it, and it might mean you have to use two different power sources. When talking about higher voltages (3-4 volts) I would limit that to no more than 8 LED lights. That will still give you plenty of light for a PS1 console.
LED strips
If you use LED strips, that can be different because more than likely they are built to run on 12V sources. Typically we do not use LED strips and for the PS1 console and advise you to do the same. It is very difficult to give an idea of how many LED lights for a PS1 console if they are in strip form. Sometimes you have to cut the strips with certain amounts of LED lights in order for them to work at all. IF you have to cut 15 to 20 LED increments you would really push your limit and take a chance on blowing the LED lights or even your console. You could also strech the limits and just end up running the LED lights at lower voltages than what they are made for, which means they will be much dimmer than they could be.
Here's what we do
Tinker Mods takes it easy on LED lights. The PS1 console is smaller and thin, it really does not take much to light that thing up. Here is a break down on how many LED lights we have our PS1 consoles handling:
PS1 Case lid | 4 LED's |
PS1 Case extra side windows | 1 LED per window (Usually a total of 2) |
PS1 Power LED | 1 LED, Any color/voltage should be okay |
