Error 05 Diagnosis
The original Xbox error 05 is actually a simple one. This error populates when your internal hard drive is not locked. In some rare cases this can happen on it's own, but 99.9% of the time the 05 error happens when someone has tried to change the internal hard drive without locking the new drive. I will go into more detail below on what you can do about this issue. However, If you obtained an original Xbox console with the 05 error code, then you may be out of luck. You won't be able to recover the console without the original HDD. If this is the case, or if you try everything below with no luck, then you would need to replace the motherboard and the hdd. Dealing with the HDD
If you got the original Xbox error 05 after trying to upgrade the hard drive, you need to start over. Re-install the original hard drive and boot the console. If the console is soft or hard modded you can run chimp again and the swap process. This time make sure to lock the HDD when you are finished.
If you didn't Mod the console
If you were hoping to open your original Xbox console and put a bigger hard drive inside with no other steps, then you need to re-install the original hard drive and look into modifying your console. There are some steps that have to be completed to upgrade a hard drive on an original Xbox console. If not followed, you can get this 05 error.
